The electronic version of The Historian No. 119 (June 2021) is now available for members, but the printing of the journal has been held up due to circumstances beyond our control. Copies should, however, be sent out in early July to the members who normally receive the printed version.

 Corona Virus Precautions

We at Tay Valley Family History Society wish to ensure that all our Volunteers, Members and visitors are protected as far as possible from the Corona Virus.

Previously issued guidelines on hand washing and thorough cleaning of keyboards and work surfaces, so far that has been in the main adhered to.

Government and NHS information indicates that the worst is yet to come, with ongoing recommendations being issued almost daily.

The identified high risk people are at present the over 70’s, which you will agree covers most of our Volunteers and visitors.

The centre is now open. See Welcome page for details.

To this end, reluctantly the Council have decided to minimise the risk and protect you all by agreeing to close the Research Centre until further notice.

The Closure will be reviewed on a two weekly basis until it is deemed acceptable to re-open and hopefully this will be a short term measure.

I hope that you understand that this decision was not taken lightly but was considered necessary.

I will endeavour to keep you up to date with this issue but should you wish any further information please contact me.

Regards

Angus Gellatly

                                                                                              Members contacting the Centre

Members, various tasks such as website maintenance, membership, bookshop, research, etc. are dealt with by different members of staff who are not in the centre everyday, so when contacting the centre for any reason, be it for website entry passwords, research info, etc, please be patient. Please remember that the centre is run by volunteers in their own time.

Tay Valley Family History Society has a new series of online talks for our members. This is the fourth, 'Auntie Jean', a talk by our Vice-president Doug Soutar on events involving scandal, fraud, forgery, contumacy, desertion, and the 1772 processes instituted by Jean Chaplin, mantua-maker in Arbroath, against her spouse William Jackson, barber “sometime residing in Montrose”. This talk gives the story of what Doug found and how he found it. For more information, follow this link https://youtu.be/rdREt_PRmhM

There's no Q&A zoom for this one as it's 'summer holiday', but please, if you have queries for Doug, do send them to the usual 'talks' address, [email protected], and they will be passed on to him. Passed talks are also available on the Members Noticeboard. For access to this, you will be required to use your members access password to log in.

Also, there is a video from David Dobson, our vice-president, promoting his new book on doing Family History, entitled "Scottish Genealogy: The Basics and Beyond". This is also on youtube so you can view it - here's the link: https://youtu.be/lcxAgOFPUCU
